The 2008 Ruth Ellis Pride Award in Entrepreneurship
Nominees in this category are recognized because they represent an organization, business or individual that promotes and provides safe spaces and environments for LGBTQ people of color to socialize in the Newark-Essex area. Ruth Ellis, in 1937, became the first American woman in Northwestern Detroit to own a printing business and she was also a photographer. Moreover, her home became a safe haven for many young,LGBTQ people of her time and was known as “The Spot.” Our nominee incorporate her entrepreneurial spirit and her desire to create safe space for LGBTQ people by the work they do.

The 2008 Bayard Rustin/Barbara Jordan Pride Award in Political Activism
The nominees in this category are recognized for their dedication to political activism and advocacy and because they have been change agents in the Newark-Essex community. Both Rustin and Jordan were politically engaged and worked to alleviate oppressions of marginalized people. The work our nominees do is an extension of the legacies of Rustin and Jordan.

The 2008 Marlon Riggs Pride Award in HIV/AIDS Activism
The nominees in this category are recognized for their tireless work to advocate for people living with HIV/AIDS as well as for their work to eradicate the virus. Marlon Riggs was a talented filmmaker and was relentless in his work against the virus but was equally dedicated to raising awareness and gaining support for people who live with it. The work of our nominees parallels Riggs’s work.
